Paducah lies in the Mississippi Embayment, where unconsolidated sediments and windblown silt differ markedly from the limestone-dominated Inner Bluegrass. Broad Ohio, Tennessee, and Clarks River floodplains shape the county's lower land.
Loess is fine windblown silt that needs erosion protection
Upland loess can erode when disturbed and exposed to concentrated runoff. Preserve or establish suitable surface protection around the pad and outlet. Evaluate the underlying soil sequence and wetness rather than assuming a firm dry crust establishes dependable support for every foundation.
River deposits can alternate between different materials
Alluvial ground can include layers of sand, silt, clay, and gravel, with later fill on developed sites. Bearing, settlement, groundwater, and seismic site conditions may need geotechnical evaluation. A typical footing borrowed from another county does not establish how a heavy warehouse or shop will perform on those deposits.
Massac Creek and other low areas add drainage constraints
A parcel need not sit directly on the Ohio River to have creek-related or local drainage concerns. Evaluate the pad, receiving outlet, and access together. Elevating the building should not create unreviewed fill effects or leave the only driveway below a critical water level.
